KB485966: Elements are different between Dossier Search Box Filter and Other Filters in data blending with Security Filter used.

Yating (Tiffanie) Zhai

Senior Cloud Support Engineer III • MicroStrategy

Elements are different between Dossier Search Box Filter and Other Filters in data blending with Security Filter used.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Symptom

The elements are different between Dossier Search Box Filter and Other Filters in data blending with Security Filter used. Please see below detailed example:
Dossier design:
Dataset 1: Region = All Regions, Year = 2014, 2015, 2016
Dataset 2: Region = South, Year = 2023
Scenario 1: Login as the Administrator, "Year" Check Box Filter can display all 4 elements after data blended.
Scenario 2: Login as the Test user with security filter (Region = South), "Year" Check Box  Filter can only display 3 elements (2014, 2015, 2016) from dataset 1, while user can search Year 2023 and get the result from Search Box Filter. And the grid visualization is displaying all 4 elements.

Cause

In this case, MCE trace is captured as below:

select	[Year]@[YEAR_ID]
from	Document
to	Ex14_tempcube1

select	[Region]@[REGION_ID],
	[Region]@[REGION_NAME],
	[Year]@[YEAR_ID]
from	Dataset1
where	[Region]@[REGION_ID] in (3)
to	Ex14_tempcube2

select	*
from	Left Outer Join(
	                Ex14_tempcube1,
	                Ex14_tempcube2
	               ) on Year
to	Ex14_tempcube3

select	[Year]@[YEAR_ID]
from	Ex14_tempcube3
where	[Region]@[REGION_ID] in (3)
to	Ex14_tempcube0

select	([Year]@[YEAR_ID]) as ([Year]@[Year])
from	Ex14_tempcube1
where	<Year> in (Ex14_tempcube0)

[Region] is not selected at the first pass,  so after left outer join, region column for Year 2023 get lost. Then when apply security filter to the final pass after left outer join (4th pass), Year 2023 is filtered out because the region for it is NULL instead of 3. That's why Year 2023 is not displayed.
The workflow for "search box filter" and "other filters" are different. For search box filter, "MCE::GetElements" is called to get the result without considering the dataset level relationship. For other filters, genjoined cube or genview cube will be called, and the result will be the intersection on the Engine side. Due to the different workflow, there is no guarantee that the same result will be obtained.

Action

Currently, Strategy has no plan to unify the workflow for search box filter and other filters considering the complexity and impact.

Workaround

Disable the Dossier Properties -> Join Behavior setting as below:

Note: There is a chance that the Visualization data will be changed after disabled the auto join as above depends on the design.
