KB6894: How to disable users for a certain period of time in MicroStrategy Command Manager

Community Admin

• Strategy

This document introduces How to disable users for a certain period of time in MicroStrategy Command Manager 2021.

In Strategy Command Manager 2021, a Strategy Administrator may want to prevent users from accessing the Strategy Project for a certain period of time. However, the project should still be available for certain power users / administrators.

This document explains a possible approach using Strategy Administrator - Command Manager scripts which can be scheduled via Microsoft Windows Scheduler or similar software.
Create the following script in Strategy Administrator - Command Manager:

ALTER USERS IN USER GROUP 'Customers' DISABLED;
Save the script as 'DisableUsers.scp'

Create another script in Strategy Administrator - Command Manager:

ALTER USERS IN USER GROUP 'Customers' ENABLED;
Save the script as 'EnableUsers.scp'

Create two DOS batch files containing a command to trigger each of the scripts. The syntax to trigger Strategy Administrator - Command Manager scripts from the DOS box is explained in the Strategy Knowledge Base document KB3692 - How to execute a command manager script through a command line interface with MicroStrategy Administrator - Command Manager 9.x .
Open a text editor and save the following commands as file:
'disableUsers.bat'
cmdmgr -n Project_Source_Name -u Username -f Inputfile
EXAMPLE:

cmdmgr -n Project_Source_Name -u Administrator -p Ad3pwx4 -f c:\winnt\DisableUsers.scp -o DisableUsers_output.bat

NOTE: Users have to hardcode the password for the Strategy user in the batch file. Therefore, Strategy recommends to add proper read/ write access to the file via WinNT security.
Do the same for the script EnableUsers.scp and call the batch file 'enableUsers.bat'.
Users can now trigger those batch files via different tools, such as Microsoft 'Scheduled Task' that can be found in the Control Panel of Windows. This will give the administrator the opportunity to define a time window for enabling/disabling users.
