This article details how to resolve the java.lang.Out.ofMemoryError experienced when executing or exporting a report/document in MicroStrategy version 9.x-10.x

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Web when users execute reports in Web or export reports to Microsoft Excel or PDF format, users see the following error message:

ka04W000001482zQAA_0EM44000000296F.jpeg

java.lang.OutOfMemoryError.

CAUSE:
This issue occurs because the JVM Heap Size of the web server machine is not large enough to hold the result set of the report while exporting from Strategy Web.

ACTION:
To resolve this issue, increase the JVM Heap Size based on available memory (RAM) on the Web Server. The JVM Heap size determines the amount of memory that the Java Virtual Machine in the Strategy Web Server can use.

When exporting a report, Strategy Web requests all the report data from Strategy Intelligence server. The Java Virtual Machine Heap Size Memory needs to be large enough to hold the result set.

To change this setting, refer to KB6446: How to increase the heap size of the Java Virtual Machine to handle large result data objects with MicroStrategy Web 9.x

Note: The maximum recommended value to increase the heap size to is based on whether the 4GT switch is enabled as well as the Operating System.
However, these maximum values will vary from environment to environment.  Consult with the Web Server vendor for specific maximum heap values recommended for the environment the Web Server is hosted on.

WARNING:
Modifying registry values incorrectly may cause serious, system-wide problems that may require the re-installation of Microsoft Windows NT. Any edit of the registry is done at the user's own risk. Since these are user-initiated changes, they are not covered by any Strategy warranty. If using Microsoft Windows NT, the user should backup the registry and/or update an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) prior to alterations.
