KB9868: How is query cancellation facilitated by the MicroStrategy Query Engine?

When a query must be cancelled, a SQLCancel ODBC command is issued by the application (in this case, Strategy Query Engine) to the database. The following are some situations under which SQLCancel is issued by the Strategy Query Engine:
 

• A user manually cancels a query in Strategy Developer or Strategy Web.
• The Maximum value for report execution time setting is reached. This setting is located in Project Configuration > Governing.
• The project goes into Execution Idle mode.
• Timeout on a SQL statement for purging data in Statistics tables is exceeded.

Per Strategy's experience, SQLCancel is a complex operation and its successful execution possibly depends upon a number of factors like the database itself, ODBC driver, database load, timing of query cancellation and others.
 
To trouble-shoot issues pertaining to query cancellation, it must be determined whether a SQLCancel command was issued by the Strategy Query Engine. This is done by obtaining an ODBC trace log.
