Tutorial - Create a 'Top 10 Contributors vs. All Others' report in MicroStrategy Web 10.x

Sarah Rubel

Senior Sales Engineer • Strategy

Using a Custom Group in MicroStrategy Web, you can create a report that displays the top ten contributors vs. all other contributors.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
The purpose of this Tutorial is to create a report which displays the top ten contributors versus all other contributors by use of custom groups in Strategy Web. This 'Top 10 Customers vs All' custom group will have two elements. One element will show the top ten customers and another element will show all customers.
Using the Strategy Tutorial project, perform the following steps to achieve this:

  1. From the Strategy Web Home page, click "Create" and choose "Custom Group"
  1. In the Custom Editor window, click + to add a new custom group element and rename the first element to be "Top 10 Customers". Set the qualification on the "Revenue" metric, which is a rank on the top ten, and where the output level is the Customer attribute.
  1. Add another custom group element. The second element will be called "All Other Customers" and will be a set qualification on the "Revenue" metric, which is a rank that excludes the top ten customers, and where the output level is the Customer attribute.
  1. To display the Top 10 Customers' names, click the "Element Display Options" button to the right of the element.
  1. In the Display drop down, choose "Show individual items only". Since all other customers are not being displayed, it is not necessary to perform this step for the second custom group element.
  1. After saving your Custom Group object, create a new Report or Dossier with the Top 10 Customers custom group and Revenue:
