Project-level Setting to Create Modern Grids by Default

Modern grids offer more advantages than the simple grid, including richer features for building column sets and microcharts and improved accessibility support.

However, because the simple grid has been used for many years, some users may not be fully familiar with the modern grid. To address the familiarity, a AC/MakeModernGridDefaultViz deployment flag was added in MicroStrategy ONE (December 2024). The flag allows you to control the default visualization type and name for dashboards at the Intelligence server level. For more information on using this flag, see Set Modern Grid as the Default Grid in a Dashboard. Strategy One (March 2026) introduces a project-level setting that controls the default behavior which allows customers to choose whether modern or simple grid is used by default for each project. You can access the settings using REST APIs. This setting controls the default behavior when creating a new dashboard or inserting a new chapter, page, panel stack, or information window from Library, Web, or the New Dashboard Editor in Workstation.

Setting name: defaultGridVisualizationType

Available values:

  • 0 - This is the default value. The setting will follow the Intelligence server-level deployment flag: AC/MakeModernGridDefaultViz.
  • 1 - Create a simple grid by default. In the visualization gallery, Grid refers to a simple grid and Grid (Modern) refers to a modern grid.
  • 2 - Create a modern grid by default. In the visualization gallery, Grid refers to a modern grid and Classic Grid refers to a simple grid.

Privileges and Required Access

The best practice is to configure the project-level setting by Administrator. Non-administrator users should have the following privileges and permissions:

  • Server - Intelligence
    • Configure server basic
    • Configure project basic
  • Client - Reporter
    • Use Library Web
  • Monitoring level Permission to the environment. For more information on setting this permission, see Manage Server Access.

  • Modify level Permissions to the project. For more information on setting this permission, see View and Edit Security Access for Projects.

Configure the Setting as an Administrator

  1. Login in to the REST API environment by by appending /MicroStrategyLibrary with /api-docs/index.html?visibility=all in your browser.
  2. Use the following request, inputting your username, password, etc: POST /api/auth/login.
  3. The response should be similar to the following: x-mstr-authtoken: efpme344hqc0g3aheurv1n7368.
  4. Use the following request to get the project ID, inputting the x-mstr-authtoken and the project name: GET /api/projects/{name}.
  5. The response should be similar to the following: "id": "B7CA92F04B9FAE8D941C3E9B7E0CD754".
  6. Use the following request to get the project settings, inputting the x-mstr-authtoken and projectId: GET /api/v2/projects/{projectId}/settings.
  7. The response should be similar to the following: "defaultGridVisualizationType": {
    "value": 0
    }
  8. Configure the project-level setting, inputting the x-mstr-authtoken, projectId, and configuring the value of the defaultGridVisualizationType: PATCH /api/v2/projects/{projecctId}/settings.
  9. The response should be similar to the following, if you want to set the modern grid as default: "defaultGridVisualizationType": {
    "value": 1
    }

Purge Caches on the Web Server

If the project-level setting does not immediately take effect on Web, this may be due to the Web Server caching the old values of the project-level setting. If this occurs, purge the Web Server:

  1. Access the Web Server Admin by appending ?pg=purgecaches to the end of your Web URL.
  2. In Web Caches, select the check box next to np (np).
  3. Click Purge.
  4. The cache for np (np) is purged and the setting takes effect on Web.
