KB47832: Common troubleshooting steps for ESRI maps in MicroStrategy Web

Community Admin

• Strategy

The following article describes common issues encountering when setting up ESRI maps in MicroStrategy Web.

As Strategy and ESRI continue to make improvements to the service/API's, ESRI keys provided for older versions of Strategy may stop working. Please ensure that you stay on the latest supported release of Strategy to avoid interruptions in service.  In particular, ESRI keys provided for Strategy 2021 Update 4 and earlier will cease to operate in April/May 2024.
The following list describes common issues encountering when setting up ESRI maps in Strategy Web 9.4.1.

  1. What is the free ESRI map key provided by Strategy?
  2. The steps for activating ESRI differ between the Product Help and technical note KB45064 .
  3. Error "The grid headers should not be merged. Please update the grid" in the widget properties.
  4. Error "No mappable attributes present on the report" in Interactive or Express view.
  5. Error "Can not find the visualization properties. Kindly set the visualization properties and run the visualization again".
  6. After creating the ESRI map widget, no markers or areas display.
  7. The message "Map data not yet available" displays on an ESRI map in a report services document.
  8. Error ""com.Strategy.utils.cache.CacheException: Connection timed out: connect" on ESRI map visualization.

ACTION

  1. What is the free ESRI map key provided by Strategy?
Strategy provides users with the free cloud-based map key for ESRI maps. However, users can also purchase an on-premise key directly from ArcGIS. For a list of the different features for ESRI map keys, refer to technical note KB46614 .

  • The steps for activating ESRI differ between the Product Help and technical note KB45064.
The steps described in technical note KB45064 are simplified steps for activating ESRI in Strategy Web 9.4.1. The esri.config file provided in this technical note is a basic file that the ESRI key is placed in, like shown below.

  • Note: This esri.config file does not contain the full configuration information from the default XML file. Strategy does not recommend users make changes to this esri.config file. If modifications are required, create a copy of the esri.config file before making any changes.

  • Error "The grid headers should not be merged. Please update the grid" in the widget properties.
Users will see the error "The grid headers should not be merged. Please update the grid" when the grid headers are merged on an ESRI map widget, like shown below.

  • To resolve this issue, uncheck "Merge" for the column and row headers, like shown below.

  • Error "No mappable attributes present on the report" in Interactive or Express view.
The error "No mappable attributes present on the report" will appear in DHTML modes for users with the cloud-based map key, like shown below.

  • Note: The cloud-based key provided by Strategy is for use in Flash and Visual Insight only. Refer to Technical Note KB46335 for more information on this error.

  • Error "Can not find the visualization properties. Kindly set the visualization properties and run the visualization again".
The error "Can not find the visualization properties. Kindly set the visualization properties and run the visualization again." will appear when users have not yet configured the ESRI map widget, like shown below.
ka0PW000000292PYAQ_0EM440000002641.png
  • To resolve this issue, set the visualization properties in the widget properties, like shown below.

  • After configuring an ESRI map widget or visualization, the map does not display any markers or areas, like shown below.
ka0PW000000292PYAQ_0EM44000000263v.png
  • This occurs when the attribute for the map widget does not have a geographical role. To resolve this issue, ensure the attribute placed in the map widget matches a geographical role such as State.

Note: Users can manually map a geographical role to an attribute through data import or through the attribute editor in Developer.

  • The message "Map data not yet available" appears an ESRI map in a report services document, like shown below.

ka0PW000000292PYAQ_0EM44000000263s.png
  • This message appears when the underlying map data does not contain a metric. In Visual Insight, users will notice the "Row Count" metric is automatically populated for an ESRI map. However, on a report services document, users need to manually add a metric to display an ESRI map.

  • The error message "com.Strategy.utils.cache.CacheException: Connection timed out: connect" displays on an ESRI map, like shown below.
This error occurs when users have a proxy or firewall blocking the connection between the Web Server and ArcGIS. For more information on this error, refer to technical note KB46348.

Note: Refer to technical note KB46526 for connection requirements and data flow for ESRI maps. For a different version of the same error, refer to tech note KB274709.
