KB7314: Understanding various terms used in Memory Contract Manager messages as observed in the DSSErrors log for the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.x and newer

• Strategy

This knowledge base article goes over the various terms used in logged component of Memory Contract Manager in MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.x and newer.

Memory Contract Manager (MCM)
The Memory Contract Manager (MCM) is a consolidated memory management component within Strategy Intelligence Server that grants or denies memory requests for different tasks based on the amount of memory available for the Intelligence Server process. MCM does not guarantee that a memory depletion scenario would not happen, but reduces the possibility of its occurrence.
For details on MCM, please refer to Strategy Knowledge Base Documents:

  • KB7295: What is the Memory Contract Manager in MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.x and later? PART 1
  • KB7295: What is the Memory Contract Manager in MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.x and later? PART 2
  • KB13315: Overview of the Memory Contract Manager (MCM) behavior in MicroStrategy Intelligence Server Universal 9.x

Successful Tasks:When a request is granted by the MCM, the following message is logged in the DSSErrors.log file on the machine. This message is logged before actual memory is allocated by the operating system.

Contract Request Succeeded: Source= MSITable, Handle=107355, Size=33918976, ContractedTotal=35893248, AvailableTotal=185817231

Failed Tasks:
When a request is denied by the MCM in Strategy Intelligence Server 8.x and later, the following sequence of entries is logged to the DSSErrors.log file. An explanation of the meaning of these values follows below:

System User Address Space (UAS):
On 32-bit architecture windows, each process address space is limited to 4 GB (Disk + RAM) of which 2 GB are reserved for the Operating System itself (System Address Space). This part of the address space is called User Address Space. Using the 4 GT switch users, would be able to access an extra 1GB of memory at the expense of a smaller operating system profile. Refer to the following Strategy Knowledge base document for details on the 4 GT switch.

KB6875: What is the 4GT switch and what is its status for MicroStrategy Intelligence Server versions 9.x?

I-Server Private bytes (PB):
It is the current number of bytes Intelligence Server process (MSTRSvr.exe) has committed that cannot be shared with other processes. As Intelligence Server needs memory, it commits pages of the virtual memory for its own use. This counter can be measured with the Private Bytes counter in the Windows Performance Monitor.

I-Server Virtual bytes (VB):
The counter associated with Intelligence Server virtual address space allocation is the committed address space (memory actually being used by a process) plus the reserved address space (memory reserved for potential use by a process). This value is called the process' virtual bytes. The maximum number of virtual bytes Intelligence Server may allocate is limited to 2GB in normal operation. It can be increased to 3 GB by turning on 4GT switch (see reference above under System User Address Space)

Single Memory Allocation Limit:
The single allocation memory limit setting prevents memory requests made by Strategy Intelligence Server from exceeding a user-specified level. For example, if the Single Memory Allocation Limit is set to 100 MB and a request is made for 120 MB the request will be rejected; only requests that fall under the limit will be satisfied. Each request is treated independently in the order it is received. All requests are subject to the original memory allocation limit.

Reserved Memory Limit:
Reserved memory is the amount of system memory that cannot be used by the Strategy Intelligence Server. This may be useful if the machine is used to run software from other parties and is not solely dedicated to Strategy Intelligence Server. For example, if the machine has Strategy Intelligence Server and another application running on it, and users wish to reserve 200 MB for other applications such as SQL Server or IIS, users would specify 200 MB for the Reserved Memory Limit. If other processes on the machine consume more than the specified Reserved Memory Limit, the actual amount of memory consumed by those processes will be used in the Memory Contract Manager (MCM) calculations for available system memory.

High Watermark:
The High Watermark is an important counter for MCM to consider. When the Virtual Byte Limit is reached, the High Watermark is simply equal to the Intelligence Server Private Byte value. Before the Virtual Byte Limit is reached however, the High Watermark is calculated as the minimum of either the Net Available Memory or the User address space. The Net Available Memory is calculated as equal to (Total Memory - (Page file usage by all other processes or reserved memory setting, whichever is greater)). Typically for a machine running only the Intelligence Server and with a sufficient amount of virtual memory, the High Watermark will be equal to the User Address Space for the Intelligence Server process.

MCM and Fragmentation:
MCM must make a number of checks to ensure that there is enough memory available for the request. MCM begins by calculating a value for the memory used by the database processes. It then updates it local counters for most of the settings discussed above. If MCM determines that there is enough memory available to satisfy the request, it must also check to verify that there is a single contiguous block of memory available for the request. MCM will deny a memory request if the size of the request is larger than 80% of the largest free contiguous memory block.

Fragmentation of virtual address space is a common problem seen in environments that have very heavy memory usage and is not a problem specific to the Strategy Intelligence Server process. The operating system may be able to alleviate this problem by performing a more aggressive purge of pages at the expense of higher CPU usage by the operating system components.
